How do I upload files to my webpage for visitors to download?

Please note: if you have our file listing module installed, see a different set of instructions for updating your file listing tables.

To add files to your webpage for visitors to download (e.g. PDF files, Word files, or Zip files), follow the steps listed below.

Method 1

  1. Open your page within the website editor.
  2. Click the cursor onto your page where you want the file link inserted.
  3. Then, upload your file via the “Add Media” button:
  4. Ensure the “Upload Files” tab is displayed, then either drag and drop your file into the screen, or click the “Select Files” button. Note there is also a maximum upload size too:
  5. Your file will upload within a few seconds.
  6. Name your file in the “Title” box, displayed on the right-hand side of the screen:
  7. Then click the “Insert into Post” button.
  8. A link to the file will now be displayed within your page content.
  9. Remember to click “Publish” or “Update” to save the page.

Method 2

Alternatively, if you want more control over how the link is displayed, you can use this method instead:

  1. Open your page within the website editor.
  2. Upload your file via the “Add Media” button:
  3. Ensure the “Upload Files” tab is displayed, then either drag and drop your file into the screen, or click the “Select Files” button. Note there is also a maximum upload size too:
  4. Copy the address of the file to your clipboard, which is displayed in the URL box on the right-hand side of the screen:
  5. Close the dialogue by clicking the “x” at the top right of the screen.
  6. Type in the text which you want to use as your link.
  7. Highlight this text and click the chain (link) icon:
  8. Paste in the URL, which you copied in step 3:
  9. Close this dialogue.
  10. Remember to click “Publish” or “Update” to save the page.

Also to know…

Files will normally be given an address that looks something like:

www.primaryimage.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/your-file.pdf

The date relates to when your page was originally published.

Please note that all files uploaded to your website via this method are publicly accessible, regardless of whether the page itself has restricted access. If you have any specific security requirements, please contact us.
